Cheryl was my best friend's mom and my second mother — the woman who called everyone "darling" and made every room feel like the guest of honor lived there. Lauren and I designed her scarf in secret while she was ill, so she could see how we saw her while she was here to see it. Five birds: four for her children, and a fifth wearing a crown. On a ribbon in script, in French: En avant et en haut, chérie. Onward and upward, darling. (Her daughter's design is The Lauren.)
