The Meredith

The most important sales pitch in the history of CB Grey happened without me.

I wasn't in the room. I wasn't on the phone. I didn't know it was happening, and I wouldn't find out until after it had already worked.

Meredith Pope was down at Alys Beach, where she has a home, and at some point — completely on her own, for no reason other than the pure kindness of her heart — she walked into the Alys Shoppe and pitched them my scarves. Not mentioned me. Pitched me. Showed them the designs. Told them the stories. Sold a brand she didn't own to a store she didn't work at, on behalf of a woman who had absolutely no idea it was happening. I was only a few months into this business. I was still Googling how wholesale worked.

To understand why she'd do that, you have to understand the pattern. On paper, Meredith is Mrs. USA Earth — which, yes, is a real title, and no, is not even close to the most impressive thing about her. In her mid-thirties, she was drowning: postpartum depression and anxiety, her children's dyslexia diagnoses arriving one after another, the crushing weight of the "perfect parenting" illusion. She has told that story publicly, which is its own kind of brave. And she says the biggest accomplishment of her life wasn't a crown. It was reaching out and asking for help.

Then she did the most Meredith thing possible: she took everything she learned the hard way and started handing it out — the blog for parents in the water she'd just swum out of, the dyslexia advocacy, a children's book about the ocean called I Am NOT Trash, which might be the best title in publishing history. Most people believe in things. Meredith does something about them.

So when I designed her scarf, she did it again — quietly turned her own tribute into a cause. The design is oceans: marine patterns, blues and greens you could float in, and save the oceans scrawled huge across the middle in handwriting you can't miss, because Meredith has never once whispered about the things she loves.

That one unasked-for pitch became The Alys, which led to nearly every custom collaboration CB Grey has ever done. So much of this brand traces back, branch by branch, to one woman walking into a shop with a pitch that wasn't hers to make.

I did eventually ask her why. Her answer: she thought the designs were beautiful, and she wanted to do something kind for someone just starting out. That was the entire explanation.

That's how you know it was everything.
